RE: Lakewood campground in Myrtle Beach

I drank a few beers as did some others around me. The ones I saw were discreet and not loud and rowdy. No one from the campground said anything to me about drinking.
The golf carts were not bad, in my opinion. There were lots of children on bicycles near the pool area. We stay in North 1 near Pirateland.

RE: Lakewood campground in Myrtle Beach

We usually stay at Ocean Lakes. That said we have stayed at Lakewood twice. Last year in August and this year in June, both times the reservations were made on short notice. We enjoyed both of our trips there. The store is well stocked and prices are reasonable. The bath houses do not have air condition but were always clean. We don't use the pool, because when we are at the beach, we are on the beach. The pool does appear to be well maintained though. We have ever stayed at Apache, so I cannot give you any info. We do like the southern end of Myrtle Beach best.

RE: Myrtle Beach, Lakewood CG: Great Time

We were at Lakewood form the 13th to the 20th. We really enjoyed our visit there also. We did rent a golf cart due to my mother-in-law having problems walking. There were a few vacant spots during our visit. As a matter of fact my kids called on June 10th and was able to get a spot from June 14th-20th.

Just 1 mile off the parkway, at the mile post 60 (Otter Creek)is Wildwood Campground. A very friendly place with great owners. Prices are reasonable too.

RE: Tom Johnson in Concord, NC closing?

Rumor from a friend who was camped in the field across Speedway Blvd from Tom Johnson's. They were told Johnson's would be moving to the Rock City camping area that the track owns. No word on where the track plans to park the few thousand campers who normally park in Rock City. Like I said just a rumor.

RE: Good Sam ERS strikes again

Texan,
That was why I made the comment that if you have a towing rider on your regular automotive insurance, then there is more than on way to "skin a cat." Everyone should know what their automotive insurance covers, just in case your emergency road service lets you down. The wrecker could have been called and paid in person, or added to the bill, either way your automotive insurance would have covered some or all of that bill. Thanks for clearing up the dealer issue.

RE: Good Sam ERS strikes again

One last question to The Texan. Was the garage/dealer open on Memorial Day, if you know? If the garage/dealer was closed then whether Good Sam's sent a wrecker on the holiday or not, was a moot point. Why tow your vehicle to a closed business? In my experience whether your vehicle was at the garage/dealer when it opened does not guarantee the vehicle will be taken before all of those who had appointments.

RE: Good Sam ERS strikes again

While I do not disagree that the road service you pay for should handle the problem. My comment was that since the vehicle in question was a tow vehicle, not a motorhome, the automotive insurance towing rider may have paid for the vehicle to be towed to a repair shop. I did not realize it would cost $400.00 to tow a vehicle to a garage. There was never any mention of costs other than the road service. The OP wrote it was a TV, and not a motorhome. As stated, he was in a campground, in a safe area and not on the roadway, so there was not an emergency, as in Emergency Road Service. He was towed the next day, while inconvenient as in missing a day from work, they did for fill the request.

Well, isn't $100.00 better than nothing?

RE: Good Sam ERS strikes again

You can elect to have towing insurance as a rider on your automotive insurance. I have that rider on my automotive insurance. It does have a limit what it will pay, but if I needed to have a tow vehicle taken to a dealer/garage for repair, it would be another avenue to explore. You should know what your insurance will pay if your vehicle becomes disabled, including lock outs. If I need to file a claim against my insurance for something, I am not concerned about rising rates.

RE: Good Sam ERS strikes again

If the person with the disabled tow vehicle was not happy with Good Sam, why didn't he just call the dealer and have them tow the vehicle. Then turn the bill over to his vehicle insurance. While I understand the perceived problem with Good Sam, if you are parked and safe in a campground, then it was not an emergency.
I am sorry he missed work, but that may have happened too, if the dealer was closed for the holiday.

RE: Roanoke Friends - Know of a place to stay ?

Just north of Roanoke, on the Parkway is the Peaks of Otter. I am guessing about 30 miles or so north of Roanoke. Peaks has a lodge and a restaurant. As you continue north on the Parkway, at the Otter Creek area is a restaurant. Both places have primivite camping. About a mile east on RT 130 from the Otter Creek area is Wildwood Campground. They have cabins and the Farmer's (owners)are great people. Both the Peaks of Otter and Wildwood have websites you can check out.
Hope this helps.

RE: Run Away Fuel Prices, What Can a Person Do

What does the drilling in the U.S. have to do with the prices of oil. Do you believe that if you can sell oil at $118.00 per barrel on the world market, you would sell the oil only in the U.S. for $50.00 a barrel?

RE: OBX Beach Closure!!!

This is all very interesting! A government agency has not done what it was ordered to do, nothing new there. HI Builder discusses at great length about how the locals have kept the big chains out which is great. That said, he also discussed working 2 or 3 jobs to keep his home which I admire.
But now is the real reason of this thread to notify people of the possibility of the locals & visitors being able to use the beach area for recreation, or that fact that when the tourist stop coming, you can no longer afford to live there.
And no I have not been there, but my son in law and his family have been visiting OBX for over 30 years.

RE: Best Myrtle Beach Campground Beach

We called Lakewood last year in May and were able to get 2 spots the second week in August. We enjoyed our stay greatly and will be back there in June this year.
We usually stay at Ocean Lakes, but were unable to get a spot there for June. We normally stay at Ocean Lakes in May & September. All of the campgrounds at the beach have their good points and followers. I was skeptical of Lakewood, but would not turn down a beach vacation based on the campground. We stayed in the section closest to Pirateland.

RE: Who tows with a 6.0L GM?is it that bad

My kids have a 2005 2500HD with the 6.0 gas and 4 speed automatic transmission. They tow a Cardinal 31BH without any problems. The mileage averages between 8.5 and 9.5 when towing depending on where they go. General around town driving is 15. Me, being a Ford guy at heart, would certainly consider the same engine when I do buy a new truck.

RE: CAN'T GET A RESERVATION!!!

Try calling Lakewood. Their online reservation program showed no openings when we wanted to go in June. We called and got the time and area we wanted, just called a few weeks ago. Last year we called Lakewood in May and made a reservation for mid August. Though we stay in Ocean Lakes several times a year, we found Lakewood fills the bill when we decide on short notice we need a beach fix.

RE: Is the pin weight on a medium-sized 5er too much for a 2500HD?

I have a friend who has a 2005 2500HD crew cab 6.0 gas with 4:10 rear gear. They pull a 2007 Cardinal 31-2BH (2 slides) with out any problems at all. The camper sits level and they have no complaints.

RE: Virginia CG ?

We have not stayed recently. We did ride through there a few weeks back, looking for close places to go for a short get a way. The park is very clean and has a new pool. It is very close to Appomattox Courthouse where the Civil War ended. Also less than an hour west is the National D-day Memorial.
